Common Massage Contraindications Everyone should Know in Vence
Massage therapy is generally considered safe, but there are specific contraindications or situations where massage may not be recommended.
Here are some common massage contraindications that everyone should know:
1. Fever or Infectious Disease: Massage should not be performed when the client has a fever or any infectious disease as massage can spread the infection to the therapist or other clients.
2. Deep Vein Thrombosis: If a person has a history of deep vein thrombosis or blood clots, massage may not be recommended as the pressure and manipulation of the massage can cause a clot to break free and move to the lungs, causing a potentially life-threatening condition.
3. Open Wounds or Skin Conditions: Massage should not be performed on areas of the skin that have open wounds, burns, rashes, or other skin conditions.
4. Cancer: In some cases, massage may not be recommended for clients with cancer, especially if they are currently undergoing treatment or have metastatic cancer.
5. Pregnancy complications: If a woman has pregnancy complications, such as preterm labor, preeclampsia, or placenta previa, massage may not be recommended.
6. Recent Surgery or Injury: If a person has recently had surgery or suffered an injury, they may need to avoid massage until the area has healed.
7. Contagious Illness: If a person has a contagious illness or condition, they should avoid getting a massage until they are no longer contagious.
It’s important to inform the massage therapist of any medical conditions, injuries, or concerns before the massage session to ensure that massage therapy is safe and appropriate for the individual.
